Elmo with Maya and her namesake (Oh, how she loved that red furry guy)
I have some scrappiness to share but I am just not feeling it.
Yesterday, I received the news that a very dear scrappy friend lost her battle with cancer. Laurie, or Elmo has we all love to call her, was truly an amazing woman. Prior to battling her illness she was a fabulous, fun-loving, awesome woman who had a smile and good word for everyone. Then, when her fight began you would think some of that spark would disappear but no way! Not with Laurie. I swear her zest for life doubled. She fought her disease head on even in the face of a grim prognosis. This woman lived every second and I am so proud to have known her.
A light went out today.
That is what Laurie was to so many of us - a light in the darkness.
Even when I didn't see her for a while just thinking about her would bring a smile to my face. She was remarkable! A truly wonderful, loving and blessed person in health and definitely in her illness.
I am so awed by the life she lived. She never let this illness beat her.
Even now, although she is gone, she did not lose to her illness. She simply said no to anymore fighting.
I believe she is at peace now. She fought hard and I am so thankful for all of the time she had.
She has done her hard part and now it is time for us to do ours. Saying goodbye will be tough but I think that if we get through it with half as much grace and dignity as our beloved Elmo we will all be okay.
Love you and miss you Elmo.
